For over three decades, he has been a driving force in the global music industry, challenging perceptions of the limitations and potential of pop music that is both easily accessible yet at times, considerably intellectual. His songs are curious creations that have become instantly recognizable by fans from every continent, and familiar to listeners from different generations. His work, first with The Police and then as a solo artist, has informed countless other musicians from every genre--so much so that his meticulously structured melodies and stirring lyricism has been reused by such country legends as Johnny Cash or even hip-hop forces like Sean “P.Diddy” Combs. He has produced a number of multi-platinum albums, a string of number one songs, and amassed worldwide sales of nearly 100 million. For his innumerable contributions to raising the standard of his craft and those who follow in his footsteps, he has collected countless awards including sixteen Grammys, a Golden Globe, and a place in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame. These accolades alone might be enough for him to be crowned this month’s NU 107 Rock Boss, but Sting’s career is about so much more than collecting trophies.
He is a true “musician’s musician”, yearning for ever greater challenges, searching for new frontiers to discover in the interest of expanding not just his art, but that of other artists as well. His profound hunger for new experiences is met equally by his drive to instill a similar appetite in others that share his passion and his mission. This is perhaps what begot the genesis of his latest release Symphonicities—an obvious allusion to the 1983 Police album Synchronicity and the subsequent reimagining of selections from his songbook for an orchestral interpretation. The album is the product of a happy accident that began in 2008 when Sting was invited to perform with the legendary Chicago Symphony Orchestra, spurring him to rework selections from his expansive catalogue. This was then followed by the Philadelphia Orchestra asking him to join them in commemoration of the 153rd anniversary of the Academy of Music, and soon after the Symphonicity tour was born.
The worldwide tour has already enjoyed sell-out performances across North America, and will soon arrive in Europe with The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra conducted by Maestro Steven Mercurio (Pavarotti, Bocelli). The tour includes a performance at London's prestigious Royal Albert Hall as well as a special concert at the Sage Hall in his hometown of Newcastle, for which he will be accompanied by the local Northern Sinfonia Orchestra. Meanwhile, the album Symphonicities, produced by Rob Mathes and Sting, and mixed by Elliot Scheiner (Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac) and Claudius Mittendorfer (Interpol, Franz Ferdinand), will serve as the ultimate commemoration of the live concert, with the first single, “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” now available digitally. Sting will also be joined by a quartet comprised of Sting's longtime guitarist Dominic Miller, multi-percussion specialist in new and experimental music David Cossin, vocalist Jo Lawry and bassist Ira Coleman.
In an interview with renowned British journalist Edward Seckerson, Sting spoke of the project with the characteristic passion and intellect that he has brought to everything he has undertaken:“I’ve always been interested in musicianship across barriers...[people who] could play classical music as well as rock and roll or jazz. Because that’s really what I like. I like these hybrid forms. But also the musicians themselves: they’re of a generation – the orchestral musicians, that is – that knows pop music. It’s not like the old days, where classical musicians would never deign to listen to pop music, because it was banal and silly. Now, these kids have been brought up with ‘music’ – the same way I have. And so they understand.”
He was also very candid about his openness when it comes to divergent definitions given to his work:“…I would never contradict someone’s interpretation of one of my songs, because that makes it rich. A lot of people would think a song is about something that I haven’t thought of before, but I’m not going to say, ‘Oh no, it’s not about that.’ If it’s that’s for you, then, the words...well then, that’s what it is for you.”It is sentiments such as these that ensure the artistic evolution of every great musician, and that secure Sting’s status as a respected artist we look forward to hearing from for more decades to come. Go to STING.COM for more news and updates. Symphonicities is available in local record stores for only P515 from MCA Music.

Just a castaway, an island lost at sea, oh
Another lonely day, with no one here but me, oh
More loneliness than any man could bear
Rescue me before I fall into despair, oh

I'll send an S.O.S. to the world
I'll send an S.O.S. to the world

I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
Message in a bottle, yeah
Message in a bottle, yeah

A year has passed since I wrote my note
But I should have known this right from the start
Only hope can keep me together
Love can mend your life but
Love can break your heart

I'll send an S.O.S. to the world
I'll send an S.O.S. to the world
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
Message in a bottle, yeah
Message in a bottle, yeah
Message in a bottle, yeah
Message in a bottle, yeah

Walked out this morning, don't believe what I saw
Hundred billion bottles washed up on the shore
Seems I'm not alone in being alone
Hundred billion castaways, looking for a home

I'll send an S.O.S. to the world
I'll send an S.O.S. to the world

I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
Message in a bottle, yeah
Message in a bottle, yeah
Message in a bottle, yeah
Message in a bottle, yeah

Sending out at an S.O.S.
Sending out at an S.O.S.
Sending out at an S.O.S.
Sending out at an S.O.S.
Sending out at an S.O.S.
Sending out at an S.O.S..
